Oktoberfest in September

Monterey Bay celebrated its German heritage this weekend at Oktoberfest in Carmel!  To be perfectly honest, I have no idea if this area has a strong German background, but they sure did celebrate it today...

It struck us both as strange that Californians celebrated Oktoberfest in September, but, what the heck, we'll drink beer no matter what month it is!  We'd heard of this particular Beerfest from some of Hubs' classmates, so we tentatively decided we'd make a day of it and put the idea on the shelf.  Until yesterday, when, I happened to see a banner advertising the festival, and of course it was this weekend.  We already had some plans, but Hubs had been really excited about this, so we rearranged a few things, set our football games of choice to record on DVR, and bought Oktoberfest tickets online.

The VIP tickets were sort of expensive ($50 each) rather than general admission ($15).  But, we figured that each VIP ticket included a $10 gift certificate to a nearby German restaurant, so coupled with admission, that was half the price of the ticket.  The remaining $25 got you two huge beers, a giant pretzel, and a traditional German dinner (brat, sauerkraut, hot potato salad, and a homemade sourdough roll).  So, if we did the math, just getting into the festival and buying a couple beers a piece ($6 each) made it worth our while to bite the bullet, buy the more expensive tickets, and save our gift certificates for a dinner out some other time!

There was a great traditional German band playing fun drinking songs, dancers, scantily clad Beer Girls, and all kinds of fun people in the "town square" like atmosphere.  We met a group of cute older folks that loved Bunkey and ended up giving us their extra beer tickets.  They also left their souvenir beer steins on the picnic table where we were sitting, so we brought those home along with the two we received with our tickets, so now we have a set of six instead of just two!

And, of course, we took some pictures of Bunkey so one day he'll remember his first Oktoberfest!
Bunkey liked the Beer Girls...
...and the music was good too!
All the beer tired him out though!
