Independence Day at Historic Yorktown

Happy 4th of July everyone...even if it is the 5th now! We had a fabulous Independence Day, and celebrated in a totally apropos place: Historic Yorktown. That's right, the place where our Independence began, following the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. Following a preemptive trip to the beach, Patrick and I came home and he worked on some chores around the house while I fried healthy chicken (check back on Wednesday for the recipe)! Then we packed out picnic basket, and headed for the Yorktown's riverfront beach.

Once at the York River's quaint beach, we set up and settled down for some fun in the sun. My brothers, parents, and grandmother joined us a few hours later, and we relocated to a shadier spot on a grassy knoll and enjoyed our traditional picnic: fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad, and banana pudding! A few football games and strolls down the pier later and we watched the fireworks over the river. Not quite the same as what George Washington saw 234 years ago, but amazing just the same. Patrick and I missed the Fife and Drums concert at the Victory Monument, but the day was fun because we were together....our first fun weekend this summer (his house is now officially on the market!) was well worth the wait!!

Really wish this was our boat....or just that we had a boat!
