Niagara Falls

Yesterday afternoon, after a fabulous morning of tasting wines, we made our way to Niagara Falls, 15 minutes from our Bed and Breakfast. We checked in to the Embassy Suites Niagara Falls and were immediately disappointed with the customer service both at the curbside valet station (valet parking is mandatory at many places in Canada, yet it isn't included in the room rates; in case you're planning a visit, you'll want to budget for $20-30 per day for parking fees) and at the check-in desk. After getting our keys, we made our way to the 32nd floor and were greeted by the maid who'd just finished preparing our room. She gave us both dirty looks before stalking off. We were a little disappointed, but when we saw the view from our room, we felt a little better! We had a suite overlooking the Falls and a window next to our jacuzzi tub so that we could enjoy a bubble bath while listening to the roar of the Niagara river below!

The view from our room!

First things first, though, as we'd promised our families that we'd email at each destination to let them know we were ok (we didn't want to deal with the higher rates our cell phones charge in Canada). The email confirmation I'd received months ago said internet was "available" in the rooms, so I was certain we could comply with our mothers' wishes, which was especially important as we'd changed our whole itinerary at this point, and they thought we were in Toronto! Well, I found a placard in the room saying that Wi-Fi wasn't available but that we could pay a $10 deposit to borrow an ethernet cord, so I called the front desk to inquire. The lady who answered told me that it wasn't a deposit (despite what the sign in my room said) and that we'd have to pay $13 to use the cord for 24 hours. When I asked for clarification based on the sign in the room, she became rude and hung up on me. Later, we learned that the "made to order breakfast" that had been advertised in the confirmation email we had was really a buffet and didn't even begin until 9:30 this morning!

Rather than let poor customer service ruin the entire rest of the day, we decided to keep in mind the reason for our visit: the see Niagara Falls. After all, we had less than 24 hours in the area, so we better make the most of what was becoming an unpleasant day... We meandered off the hotel property and made our way down to a beautiful nature walk along the river. We could hear the rushing water and feel the sea spray as millions of gallons of water crashed to the rocks below. It truly was breathtaking to see such power!

After viewing the Falls, we had drinks in the hotel, got changed, and had a yummy steak dinner to end the evening.

With an 11 hour drive ahead, we decided that we couldn't wait until 9:30 to get on the road, much less to just start breakfast, so we left about an hour ago and considered the breakfast a lost cause, along with any very many good impressions of Niagara Falls. Don't get me wrong, the waterfalls were gorgeous, and I'm glad I was able to see them, but I wish we could have stayed in Niagara-on-the-Lake two nights and just driven to The Falls for a couple of hours. If you ever visit Niagara Falls, learn from my mistakes and don't get a hotel right on the river; you'll be sorely disappointed and pay a very pretty penny for it (the customer service we didn't receive still makes me nauseous when I think about how much that hotel room cost us!)...

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Just wanted to continue my post from yesterday's arrival in Niagara-on-the-Lake and post some pictures of our time in this quaint little town!

This morning, Trish made us a fabulous Vegetarian Eggs Benedict, Canadian ham, homemade homefries, fresh fruit, and fresh homemade pastries (she even had my favorite, strawberry-rhubarb jam!)... I didn't think I'd like the eggs, since I normally don't like that dish, so when asked if I'd like one or two, I asked only for one. Well, Trish's eggs benedict was made with fresh eggs straight from her chicken coop in the backyard and fresh tomatoes from her vast garden. She also used a pesto sauce instead of the traditional hollandaise, which might have made the difference in my liking the meal!!

After breakfast, and even though it was only 10:00, we decided to do a little wine tasting and to drive "the loop" through the historic part of town. We went to three of the five places recommended by our innkeepers, bought a bottle of wine at each stop (who knew that this area was Canada's own Napa Valley?!?), and then had lunch at The Little Red Rooster Cafe! After lunch, we drove through the town a little more, wishing we had more time to spend and picking out all the B&B's where we wish we could stay... I think we've decided that we want to come back some time for an antiquing and wine tasting trip!! By 1:00 we were heading toward The Falls and our last stop on this trip...

The chickens that provided our fabulous breakfast!

The 280 acres of vines were breathtaking!!

We went on a cellar tour and despite the massive production, the entire process and methods were so charming...I just loved the "look" of the barrel rooms!

Change of Plans!

Well, the beauty of a road trip is that you can change your plans if you'd like! This morning, we decided to boycott Ottawa and Toronto... The weather forecasts weren't looking promising, meaning more touring and sight-seeing in the rain, and trying to "do" five major cities in a week was really just a bit ambitious even for the most adventurous travelers. I mean, I consider myself a world-traveler after living and visiting some of the places I have, but lugging suitcases in and out of hotels and spending hours driving to a new destination every 24 hours is really quite exhausting. We had a blast in French Canada, but Patrick didn't think I'd enjoy the more "American" cities of Ontario as much. I'm sure they're wonderful, and we'd like to do another vacation in order to see them, but it was really just too much this time around.

Instead, we cancelled our hotels in Ottawa and Toronto, moved our reservation in Niagara Falls up a day (to tomorrow night), and booked a B&B in Niagara-on-the-Lake for this evening. Our Bed and Breakfast, Green Oaks, is located on the edge of a gorgeous vineyard and after a seven hour drive from Montreal through Toronto's construction and rush hour, we were ready to relax and get a good night's sleep! This town claims to be the prettiest in Canada, and from what I saw on the drive in, I believe it! We had a lovely pasta dinner on the patio at The Old Winery in the historic district and as we're in the wine and antique region of the country, we plan to visit a few vineyards in the morning before heading to Niagara Falls...

Montreal

Bon soir! We arrived in Montreal early this afternoon and settled into our hotel. After relaxing for a bit, we made our way to the gym to make up for some of the fabulous food we've eaten so far this vacation! Then we walked down the street to Les 3 Brasseurs for dinner. It had started raining a bit, so there was a line to get inside, but the food was absolutely fabulous and the beer quite refreshing! We shared a dinner pizza and a dessert pizza (and a pitcher, of course) before wandering about the streets a bit... Actually, we just missed our turn, so we decided to see what was close-by our hotel. We found the Basilique Notre Dame de Montreal and definitely want to go back tomorrow to visit and take a tour!!

Tuesday morning, we woke up bright and early and had breakfast in our hotel. One look out the window, though, and we discovered the rain had started back up and it was pouring. We stood at the door of the hotel trying to decide what we should do: do a driving tour and chance finding street parking if we wanted to venture out? wait a little while to see if the rain let up? bite the bullet and rough it through the rain? In the end, we decided that we only have this one day in Montreal (tomorrow we leave for Ottawa) so we might as well venture out and see what we could, knowing that our plans would be weather dependent throughout the day so we needed to remain flexible. We retrieved our umbrella from the car, linked arms, and trekked through the rain-drenched side streets back to the basilica. We arrived about 30 minutes before the English-speaking tour, but were allowed inside to wander before the tour began. Let me just say I was not prepared for this when we walked through the doors:
Following our tour, we found that the rain had let up a bit, so we wandered down to the river-front area, marveling at the yachts in the Vieux Port (Old Port), gardens along the river, cute/crazy sculptures and monuments, and the quaint cobblestone streets of Vieux Montreal.

By that point, the rain had totally stopped and it was just muggy out, but we still wanted to make the most of our one full day in Montreal. We made our way back to the hotel to get the car and then drove to the outskirts of town to the Jean Talon farmers market. Less than a minute after walking inside, Patrick could tell I was in heaven and asked if we needed to add more time to the meter. I seriously could have spent an entire day in there! I told Patrick that if we had a market like this at home I'd never step foot in another grocery store as long as I lived. He wasn't too happy with that since the prices for the fresh produce and meats were a bit high...but it was worth it! We picked up a baguette, cheese, pate, and deli meats for a picnic lunch before piling back into the car.

We took our picnic to the top of Mont Royal, the mountain that gives Montreal its name, and ate near a peaceful lake. Even though it was overcast, it was a gorgeous setting and a perfect way to enjoy the city! After eating, we walked around the lake and then drove to the scenic outlooks along the summit for amazing views of the entire city! It was seriously a perfect afternoon, despite the less than stellar weather!

Quebec City

This place is so much like Europe... We got in at about 11:00 and by 11:30 we had the car unpacked and we were checked in. Our hotel is right next to Vieux Quebec (Old Quebec) and the ambiance is fabulous! The bellhop gave us a great recommendation for a Creperie for breakfast (Patrick had blueberry and custard and I got strawberry and custard).

Then we went to Mass in the heart of the Lower City (oldest part of Old Quebec) at Notre Dame des Victoires, the oldest church in North America (supposedly, of course). The church was small, quaint, and gorgeous and the music was amazing. The cantor sounded like a professional opera singer. After Mass, we wandered a bit, looking for souvenirs (Mom, I found a silvered sugar Maple leaf Christmas ornament for our tree!!) and seeing some of the sights.

We walked along the walls of the fortress and riverfront area while working up an appetite for a quick lunch at a Lebanese restaurant before coming back to the hotel to relax and clean up for a little bit before heading out for dinner later in the evening. We had reservations at a cute little place we found earlier this afternoon, Aux Anciens Canadiens, the oldest house in Quebec, and then we had drinks at Chateau Frontenac, one of the world's most grand hotels that isn't far from our own... They're known for their martinis, so of course, that is what we chose!!

Tomorrow we'll get up on the early side and head west along the river to Montreal!

Couldn't help myself!

Notre Dame des Victoires, where we went to Mass this morning

Chateau Frontenac, the most photographed hotel in the world. At one point Patrick said we should stay here. Then I told him how much the rooms cost! They're known for their martinis, so we went after dinner!

The walk above/along the St Lawrence River is GORGEOUS...the breeze felt nice too!

Patrick was a little more traditional...but I discovered olives aren't so gross when you drown them in vodka! I had a Million Dollar Legs Martini...yum!

Canada, Eh?

Bonjour!! We made it! Patrick and I woke up early this morning and drove up the coast to Canada... Since Patrick had never been across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, we decided to take that way up through the Eastern Shore. From there, we skirted Philly and New York, then took I-87 through the Adirondack Mountains. Once through the mountains, we hit the boarder and Montreal before heading East to Quebec City! Follow along as we tackle Road Trip 2010!!
Crazy cool sky as we left Suffolk

Getting ready to head over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel...23 miles long!

We were soooo ready to be out of the car at this point...

The Adirondack Mountains were gorgeous to drive through.....

At the border and almost there!!!

Welcome to Canada...three more hours to Quebec City!
